Adanjesus Marín,

On eve of GOP Convention, Latino PA residents to Denounce Sen. Pat Toomey’s Embrace of Trump’s Hateful Rhetoric:

Latino and immigrant residents will protest outside Sen. Pat Toomey’s office as he mirrors Trump’s anti-immigrant campaign

Allentown, PA—On Saturday, just days before the Republican National Convention (RNC) where Donald Trump will become the official Republican presidential candidate, Latino and immigrant Pennsylvanians will denounce Sen. Pat Toomey for embracing the anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy proposals of Donald Trump. Sen. Toomey’s constituents will protest outside of his office in Allentown in response to Toomey’s cynical effort to win votes among working-class white voters by promoting anti-immigrant policies. Sen. Toomey’s strategy has been clear in his efforts to pass legislation that would punish localities that have sought to improve community-police relations and public safety for all residents by distancing local law enforcement from immigration enforcement.

Mr. Trump launched his campaign by referring to Mexicans as “criminals” and “rapists,” and has repeatedly called for mass deportation of the country’s eleven million undocumented immigrants, as well as a ban on Muslims from entering the nation, and an end to executive actions to protect immigrant families. Pat Toomey has similarly suggested that immigrants are criminals and murderers, highlighting a single crime in California as evidence to justify his anti-immigrant positions—when research has consistently shown lower crime rates among immigrants in the United States.

With the RNC convention set to offer Mr. Trump his largest platform for espousing his anti-immigrant and racist views, Latino and immigrant Pennsylvanians are incensed by elected officials mirroring his campaign to activate a xenophobic base. Latinos, immigrants, and people of color in Pennsylvania will rally and share their high levels of motivation to register and vote in November, and to hold accountable candidates who embrace the politics of hate.
