Progressive Power Coalition Endorses 16 Progressive Champions from NYC in the State Senate and Assembly

Top community advocacy group back slate of Senate and Assembly Candidates who are leading efforts to advance progressive change in New York

New York, NY (08/08/2016) — Today, the Progressive Power Coalition (PPC) – a coalition of 5 powerful membership organizations—Citizen Action New York (CANY), Community Voices Heard Power (CVH-P), New York Communities for Change (NYCC), Make the Road Action (MRA), and VOCAL-NY Action Fund (VAF) announced its endorsements of a slate of 16 progressive champions running for election and re-election to the New York State Senate and Assembly.

The PPC, along with all of its constituent groups, announced it is endorsing the following candidates. For State Senate, the PPC endorses for re-election Senators Brad Hoylman, Liz Krueger, José Peralta, Gustavo Rivera, James Sanders, Jr., and Daniel Squadron. For State Assembly, the PPC endorses for re-election Assembly members Rodneyse Bichotte, Maritza Dávila, Richard Gottfried, Brian Kavanagh, Walter Mosley, Francisco Moya, Diana Richardson, Linda Rosenthal, Nily Rozic, and Latrice Walker.

In a critical election year for New York State, these candidates have stood out for their progressive leadership across a range of issues, including: workers’ rights, immigrants’ rights, affordable housing, police and criminal justice reform, climate justice, fair elections, and much more. The members of the PPC explained their backing of these 16 candidates as follows:

María Rubio, member of Make the Road Action and Brooklyn resident, said, “These candidates for state office in New York City have shown that they will be the champions of progressive legislation and the allies of New Yorkers like us, who are pushing for the changes that working-class communities of color need most.”

Carl Stubbs, of VOCAL-NY Action Fund (VAF), affirmed: “We want a New York State Legislature that reflects progressive values and is serious about moving legislation that will advance economic and racial justice. These candidates have proven track records of not just talking about progress, but putting in the work to actually improve the lives of New York's most vulnerable residents."

Marie Pierre, Board Chair of New York Communities for Change, stated: "When a fascist ego maniac could be the next president of the United States, local progressive change is more important than ever. That's why progressive community groups are uniting forces to elect to office the most progressive front our State has ever seen."

Joseph Mpa, Board Chair of Community Voices Heard Power (CVH-P), said: "This is a critical time for those who have the most on the line. Our very existence and our right to survive and flourish is being challenged. These are candidates who we know will fight with and for us to obtain equality and justice for each and every one of us."

Margaret Segall, Citizen Action of New York Secretary, affirmed: “As a lifelong New Yorker, I have seen why we need candidates that understand the struggles of working class families and who have been strong advocates for ethics reform and fair elections. Some of the biggest issues that New Yorkers face are affordable housing, education, and corruption in Albany, and we are excited to support these candidates because they understand these issues and are ready to fight on our behalf.”
